My main objective as a teacher is to teach my students everything I know. I will utilize textbooks, but not let them takeover my practice. I want my students to know everything there is to know about being an excellent nurse; maybe they can learn from my mistakes. I will teach my students the ins and outs of being a new nurse, the things you need to know when calling a doctor, the in the classroom skills as well as the at the bedside skills. I will teach my students what they need to know to pass their state boards, and what they need to know to be an excellent nurse (sometimes these things can be very different). I will teach my students that the state boards will not teach you the importance of holding a dying patient’s hand and providing comfort to a family, but they will teach you how to calculate a drip rate when an IV pump breaks – and, these are both two very different but very important concepts. My students will know how to save a life and change a life and understand that skills are always developing and mistakes will be made. My objective in a sense is the same thing I am teaching my students: how to make a difference and impact the lives of others. I hope to make a difference in the lives of my students so that maybe, one day, they will talk about me the way I talk about past instructors who truly impacted my nursing practice today.
